Gippsland has long been underestimated as a wine region, but those familiar with its wines have known for quite a while that it is capable of producing drops of great elegance and power, especially with the varieties of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. This Chardonnay, from one of Gippsland’s most celebrated makers, illustrates not only the winery’s individual style, but also the incredible quality of fruit produced in the region.
It is a beautifully bright, glistening lemon yellow in the glass. The nose shows white peach and apricot, backed up by an enticing butterscotch character and a hint of sweet red apple. It is a big, full-bodied white, slightly viscous and silky smooth in the mouth with a flavour reminiscent of peach nectar. It is buttery and soft, but with good acid balance, and the oak is very well integrated, providing texture and structure without overwhelming the fruit. A very appealing and well-made wine.
